Staying Motivated as You Grow Your Business

Building a business is an exciting and exhilarating journey, one which comes with many highs and lows. When things are on the up, everything clicks, you are in the zone. However, during tough times, it can feel like you can’t catch a break and the list of tasks keeps growing.

The drive to push forward when everything is clicking, is easy. However, during the lows, it becomes increasingly hard to keep motivated and committed to the end goal.

Find time for yourself

Building a business is intense and at times, feels like there are a hundred and one things to do. Not only are you working long hours, time is spent responding to clients, employee concerns, paying bills, company issues, complaints,  and back-of-house duties, this is before you have even had a chance to look at developing the businesses core value proposition.

When your business becomes all-consuming and all you think about is work, you have to bear in mind that being switched on 24 hours a day is not always healthy. To ensure you keep productive and motivated make sure you schedule in time to take a step back.

Going on holiday, finishing early one day a week or turning your phone off at night can make the world of difference. Making time for yourself will help to recharge your batteries and keep you focused. If you don’t, you run the risk of burning out, fairly quickly.

Do you have a trigger?

During tough periods where motivation may be lacking and you can’t muster the energy to review your strategies or go over the accounts, do you have a source of instant motivation?

It is hard to maintain a high level of motivation 24/7, so when you experience those lulls, it is a good idea to have something that will spark you into action. For some people, this may be a quote, a video, a family photo or even a mentor.

If you don’t have one already, you may be surprised to find how effective a trigger or a little queue may be in regenerating your motivation levels.

Build meaningful connections

Building a business can be a lonely process, particularly if you don’t have a business partner or it is your first business. However, remember you don’t have to go it alone.

Look for ways to build meaningful connections with like-minded individuals. This could be through industry networking events, a mentor or mentee, an assistant or even clients. Building these relationships will not only keep you motivated and striving for success but they could also open up doors that may have been closed before.

You never know who you may meet at a conference, bringing on an assistant with us may allow you to focus on building the business, or a mentor may introduce you to a potential investor, partner or client.

What is your vision?

What are you in business for? Is it to make a quick buck or is there a real goal and mission behind this project? Successful businesses tend to be driven by more than revenue and profit.

Yes, money will make the business go but a key source of motivation is being able to solve a problem or achieve a greater purpose compared to building a Fortune 500 company. As your business grows and expands, make sure you are constantly working towards achieving that vision and remind yourself why you started the project when you are falling behind.

Remember, building a business will come with its ups and downs. How you learn to handle these fluctuations will determine how successful your business is in the long run. In order to get the most out of these times, it is important you are able to stay motivated and constantly moving forward. Do not let a rough patch get you down, because that is just part of the journey.
